Tomohito Osaki began the spin-off novel in 2006, with the final volume, Volume 8, releasing in 2018. Hideaki Sorachi wrote and illustrated the original Gintama manga, which first ran in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from 2003 to 2018, and then in their Jump Giga until February 2019.
The Gintama was animated by Sunrise until Season 4, which is when Bandai Namco Pictures took over. The anime has a total of 367 episodes, as well as numerous OVAs, movies, games, novels and specials. The latest installment was the Gintama: The Very Final movie, which premiered in 2021.
VIZ Media licensed the manga in English as Gin Tama, while Crunchyroll is streaming the anime. The story follows Gintoki Sakata, a legendary samurai with a sweet tooth who is now handling odd jobs. Together with his new friends, he has plenty of wacky adventures while also having to deal with his past and saving the world on the side.
One of the most famous arc, the Yoshiwara in Flames Arc, also announced a fully reanimated movie adaptation today. It’s set to premiere in 2026.
