Kodansha’s official Gachiakuta World X (formerly Twitter) account shared on September 30 that the series “took the top spot in Crunchyroll’s July season viewership rankings.” Debuting on July 6, the dark fantasy series will run for two consecutive cours (across the Summer and Fall 2025 seasons).

No confirmation from Crunchyroll nor the Crunchyroll’s own English Gachiakuta X account has come by the time of this article’s publication. It’s also unclear how Crunchyroll would measure viewership. (Netflix, for example, calculates this by dividing total hours watched by runtime in hours.) Still, it’s hard to imagine how Gachiakuta isn’t one of Crunchyroll’s most popular titles this season. Despite waning somewhat by its mid-season finale, its first episode racked up 80k likes, above the premieres of highly anticipated sequels like My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 (59k) and Kaiju No 8 Season 2 (49.4k).
Without numbers or methodology, it’s unclear how this may compare to other Summer 2025 anime more broadly, such as Netflix’s The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity, which has 13.2 million hours watched (as of October 3) after finally premiering outside of Asia on September 7. Gachiakuta continues to receive praise for its likable cast, distinctive art style, story, and animation.
Gachiakuta adapts the manga of the same name by Kei Urana (story, art) and Hideyoshi Andou (graffiti design). Fumihiko Suganuma directs the series at Bones Film. The anime is described:
In a floating city where the rich discard their waste—and people—Rudo is framed for murder and thrown into the Pit, where a hellscape of mutated trash beasts dwell. To survive, he must wield a new power and join the Cleaners. Rudo doesn’t just aim to battle monsters, but the corrupt who cast him into Hell.
